Summerfest presents Italian orchestra

You don't have to wait till fall for classical music events in South Florida.

The Symphony of the Americas is back for its 22nd Summerfest, and you can catch a performance at 3 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11 SW 11th St., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for students.

Each summer, the Fort Lauderdale-based symphony welcomes a counterpart from Europe for joint performances. This time around, the symphony is hosting Italy's I Musici Estensi Chamber Orchestra of Italy for a monthlong series of performances throughout Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.

"Things kind of slow down during the summer. This keeps the classical scene going,'' said Kristen Noffsinger, marketing director for the Symphony of the Americas. "It gives our South Florida residents and visitors a cultural option for their summer activities."

Presented by American Airlines, the summer series is sponsored by various organizations including the Hyatt Regency Pier Sixty-Six, Wells Fargo, Broward Cultural Council and the Sun Sentinel.

This year's programs highlight the music of Dvorak, Telemann, Purcell, Verdi and Argentine composer Piazzolla. Four members of the Fort Lauderdale symphony are joining the Italian group as part of a cultural exchange.

The concerts will also include the Florida debut of an original composition titled "Remembering Naples,'' which is a tribute to the Napolitano culture, and famous melodies such as "Funiculi, Funicula."

"It's a nice mix between the folk songs and the classical," Noffsinger said.
