WPBT2 rocks the local music scene with new show

South Florida bands looking for their big break have another outlet that puts the spotlight on them.

WPBT-Ch. 2's new program, "The Gig," focuses on local musicians, where they rehearse and perform and how they create their music. It will air 7:30 p.m. Tuesday as a special edition of the broadcaster's "Art Loft'' series, which highlights local artists.

"There is so much talent out there,'' said Rob Reep, a producer at WPBT. "It would be great for us to be a local new media home for those artists, and to have that music diversity in our community and showcase that."

The program — like a local version of VH1's "Behind the Music" docu-series but without the drama — began as a four-minute web episode last spring and has evolved into a 30-minute TV program. WPBT is looking to make "The Gig'' a full-fledged series next year.

The debut episode features Vespers Nine, a five-member classic rock cover group from Broward County that also writes and performs its own music. Cameras capture band members laying tracks in a North Miami recording studio, where they explain how Heart, Metallica and Toto became their musical influences. (If you're wondering about the band's name, members explain that it came from a poem by S.T. Coleridge.)

"Our hope is that one day, we find a local artist and this can help them out and really help their career and, who knows, you may see them on Top 40,'' Reep said.
