This will only be the third time he’s done it, but Billy Joel’s New Year’s Eve residency in the sixth borough should be considered something of a birthright.
Where else would he want to be in January, right? But the warmth Joel feels in South Florida is not merely the weather. The guy is beloved down here.
When the Piano Man performs into the wee hours at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, there may not be a performer on any stage in South Florida on Sunday night with the deep relationship shared between Joel and his audience. These are people who feel a longstanding connection to his music — from back in the day, back on the Island, maybe — since the release of “She’s Got a Way,” “Piano Man” and “New York State of Mind,” songs they have made sure their own kids appreciate.
It’s a discography so deep and rich that during last year’s New Year’s Eve concert, when he appeared to be having so much fun, Joel couldn’t find time to play such crowd-pleasers as “Honesty,” “She’s Got a Way,” “Only the Good Die Young” and “Just the Way You Are” — and fans still raved about the show. We like to think that those four songs are a given this time around.
When: 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31
