Step back in time and take a twirl under the stars at Jazz and Chocolate at the historic Bonnet House in Fort Lauderdale.
The sixth-annual fundraiser for the nonprofit will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, and features dancing on the veranda to jazz and blues standards by Liz Sharp and Company as the swans glide by in the lily pond.
Guests can sip wine and nibble hors d'oeuvres by chef Jorge Luis Fernandez of the Spaniard Tapas Bar and Cafe in Boca Raton. Later, they can indulge in chocolate confections by Jan's Chocolates in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Publix and Miami-Dade-based Celebrity Cruises.
"It's a wonderful evening," says David Hagerman, chairman of the event, which is sponsored by the Bonnet House Alliance.
"The courtyard is open to the stars, and the veranda overlooks the freshwater slough. There really is no other place like it in Fort Lauderdale."
Proceeds support repairs on the grand estate, Hagerman says, which sits on 35 acres of lush, tropical gardens off A1A south of Sunrise Boulevard. Built in 1920, the site was donated by Evelyn Fortune Bartlett to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983.
"It's right on the ocean, and the weather is gorgeous," Hagerman says. "It will be a great night to be outside in South Florida."
Jazz and Chocolate is 7 p.m. Friday at 900 N. Birch Road, in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $50. Call 954-261-2559 or go to BonnetHouse.org.
