A popular outdoor concert series starts a week earlier this year, and that's just fine with one Jimmy Buffett tribute act.

Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways will open the 36th annual Bank of America Starlight Musicals at Holiday Park on Friday. The series usually kicks off in mid-June, but because July 4 falls on a Friday and a celebration is planned for the park that day, the city of Fort Lauderdale needed to begin now in order to present the full series of eight concerts.

Stowe, who has been a summer series regular for 10 years, got his normal date of mid-August moved up.

"Sometimes, it takes a couple of weeks for people to be aware of the series, but I hope they catch on more quickly this time," Stowe says. "Plus, it can get a bit warm out there in mid-August, so we're happy."

Stowe, who describes his music as "trop-rock," says he draws all kinds of fans when he plays at Holiday Park. The playlist on his web site includes 70 songs by Buffett.

"I love it. It's awesome, and there's a great turnout," he says. His band plays many corporate and private events, so he likes playing to the public. "It's an all-around good vibe. How could you not love Fort Lauderdale?"

The shows will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Fridays on the football field at Holiday Park, which is located at East Sunrise Boulevard and Federal Highway. Residents and visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and coolers, but pets are not permitted in the park.

There also is a no-smoking zone, on the south side of the park (the right side of the field when looking at the stage), and a tent-free zone. Canopies, tents and umbrellas are only permitted in the designated areas along the back and sides of the football field.

Sponsor Bank of America will feature a nonprofit group every week, and patrons are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items.
