An exquisite and defining presence on the local jazz scene even before the 2004 release of her brilliant debut, “The Nearness of You,” vocalist Nicole Henry will bring down the curtain on this season’s South Florida Jazz at Bailey Hall series on Saturday, June 16, at the Broward College venue in Davie.
The 2000 University of Miami graduate (with a double major in theater and advertising) will perform with her quintet in a program that likely will draw from the Great American Songbook, including the Ella Fitzgerald favorite “Embraceable You” and Sarah Vaughan’s “That’s All.”
But Henry also can bend a modern pop song to her will, as she proved on her 2015 EP “Summer Sessions,” an elegantly stripped-down collaboration with guitarist-producer James Bryan that includes spare interpretations of Coldplay’s low-key meditation “Magic” and the soul-baring romance of Ray Lamontagne’s “Let It Be Me.” A little taste of that in Bailey Hall Saturday night would be delightful.
When: 8 p.m. Saturday, June 16
Where: Bailey Hall at Broward College, 3501 SW Davie Road, Davie
Cost: $35, $40, $45; $10 for students younger than 25 with ID
