Billy Joel, the celebrated songman who hasn't toured the States since he co-headlined several dates with Elton John in 2010, is billed to perform Jan. 7 at the BB&T Center, venue folks at the Sunrise arena announced Thursday morning.
The unveiling of Joel’s South Florida date came after a bit of cloak-and-dagger mystery by the BB&T Center, who teased a "major concert announcement" on Monday with media outlets.
At a swank gathering at the venue's Club RED by Stoli lounge, against a backdrop of shiny silverware, a Steinway piano and platters of vodka and grilled chicken, Sunrise Sports & Entertainment CEO Michael Yormark told reporters, "I’ve been trying to get this big shot for five years."
"He is an artist who has embraced South Florida as his home away from home," Yormark says, prolonging the tease for a few extra seconds before name-dropping the piano man behind "Tell Her About It" and "Don't Ask Me Why."
Yormark, who made the announcement with Broward County Vice Mayor Barbara Sharief, says Jan. 7 will be Joel's lone South Florida arena date, but could not say whether the artist intended to add others.
The young British singer-songwriter Tom Odell, who is 22, will open for Joel, whose last concert was the 12-12-12 charity performance at Madison Square Garden for victims of Superstorm Sandy. The mammoth entertainer’s last South Florida date was a string of six concerts in January and February 2009 at Hard Rock Live.
