PHOTOS: The great Fort Lauderdale guac walk

Cinco de Mayo marks a Mexican victory over the French in the 1862 Battle of Puebla. In most of Mexico, it's a minor holiday.

But across South Florida, Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated with beer, tequila and -- perhaps Mexico's best food export -- guacamole. Come Saturday, Americans will consume 81 million pounds of Hass avocados, or 162 million pieces of fruit.

We can think of no better place in South Florida to sample guacamole and the diverse styles of restaurants where it's served than on Federal Highway from downtown Fort Lauderdale north to Commercial Boulevard. It's a six-mile strip of Mexican that starts just north of Broward Boulevard and includes big chains (Chipotle, Baja Fresh) and homegrown independents (Casa Frida, La Bamba).

If Cinco de Mayo has you searching for guacamole and other Mexican fare, come along on a guac walk. Just keep in mind that Federal Highway turns eastbound and becomes Sunrise Boulevard before resuming its northward route. -- John Tanasychuk

The kitsch-filled, bargain-priced restaurant serves lunch for under 10 bucks. It starts with chips and salsa, followed by a bowl of soup. Entree choices run from tacos and burritos to Cuban dishes such as ropa vieja.
