Looking to escape the remnants of an incredibly harsh winter, spring breakers are heading south to enjoy Florida's sun and sand in numbers that are set to shatter those of previous years, USA Today is reporting.

Between January and March last year, Florida saw 26.3 million out-of-state visitors -- a record for the Sunshine State and a 36 percent increase from the 19.4 million visitors it saw in 2000. Data collected during the first quarter of this year indicates that Florida will break the record set in 2013, according to the newspaper.

Travelocity ranks South Florida as the No. 1 spring break destination, beating out cities like Cancun and Maui. Other Florida cities to dominate the top 10 list include the Orlando area at No. 2, Fort Myers at No. 4 and the Tampa Bay area at No. 8.
