Thousands are rallying online to prevent a pit bull from being euthanized after it attacked and seriously injured a 4-year-old boy after the child tried to take the dog's bone, the Associated Press is reporting.
The Feb. 20 attack left 4-year-old Kevin Vicente with a broken lower jaw bone, broken eye socket and a broken cheek bone -- injuries that will require years of plastic surgery and recovery.
More than 47,000 people have signed a Change.org petition addressed to Maricopa County Animal Control in Arizona urging the organization to spare Mickey's life, saying the pit bull "was behaving as a dog when chewing his bone."
Donations have been pouring in for Kevin's medical bills and for a trust set up for Mickey by The Lexus Project, a nonprofit that helps defend dogs in danger of being euthanized. A pro bono attorney will be representing Mickey at a March 25 hearing to determine the animal's fate.
