Police say a visitor at a Miami museum intentionally destroyed a vase by famed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei.

A South Florida artist destroyed a $1 million vase by famed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei to protest Pérez Art Museum Miami displaying the work of international artists rather than local ones, Miami New Times is reporting.

"I did it for all the local artists in Miami that have never been shown in museums here," 51-year-old Miami painter Maximo Caminero told the New Times. "They have spent so many millions now on international artists. It's the same political situation over and over again. I've been here for 30 years and it's always the same."

The artist, who said the vandalism was intentional, grabbed the vase and smashed it on the ground, but he said he didn't realize that it cost $1 million. He now faces felony criminal mischief charges.

Despite Sunday's incident, the Ai Weiwei: According To What? exhibit will run through March 16 at the museum.
