What to do with the kids this long Memorial Day weekend: Air Show, Beach Party, KidzFest

A long weekend is in store for South Florida families with the Memorial Day national holiday on Monday, and public school students in Broward County get an extra day of fun, thanks to an employee planning day on Friday.

The real fun begins Saturday, however, with the reopening of Jungle Island, the new “Power of Poison” exhibit at the Frost Museum of Science, and the Air and Sea Show on Miami Beach.

In Broward County, families can seek the sun at the Great American Beach Party on Fort Lauderdale Beach or check out the Borowski Art Glass exhibit at the Memorial Day Weekend KidzFest at Flamingo Gardens in Davie.

In Palm Beach County, get a look behind the scenes with an overnight family adventure at the Palm Beach Zoo or get a taste of the islands at the Palm Beach Jerk & Caribbean Culture Festival on Monday.

Plenty of Memorial Day events are planned Monday, as well, with parades, memorial ceremonies and concerts.

Peppa Pig Live!, Wednesday, 6 p.m. The popular family series is back with an action-packed live show featuring life-sized puppets and costumed characters in "Peppa Pig’s Surprise." Join Peppa, George, Mummy Pig, Daddy Pig and other favorite characters in an all-singing, all-dancing adventure full of songs, games and surprises. $29.50-$134.50. Animal Keeper For A Day, Friday, 10:30 a.m. Animal keepers have the coolest job. Snooza-pa-ZOO-za, Friday, 7 p.m. Kick off your Memorial Day weekend with a family overnight at the zoo, including animal encounters, a nocturnal tour and themed activities. Memorial Day Weekend KidzFest, Saturday through Monday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Families can enjoy special guided tours, bounce houses, kids' entertainment, games, crafts, vendors, food and the Borowski Art Glass exhibit, "Fables and Fairytales." $12.95-$19.95. Jungle Island in Miami, beginning Saturday. Jungle Island, which has been closed since Hurricane Irma, reopens Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with the new Aerodium outdoor skydiving simulator and new water elements throughout the park. Air & Sea Show, Saturday and Sunday. As part of the National Salute to America’s Heroes, the family-friendly event along Ocean Drive between 11th and 14th streets in Miami Beach includes military equipment, exhibitions, demonstrations, fly-bys, precision exercises and a display village 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The Music Explosion on Saturday night, 6-10 p.m., features Shaggy, along with MAX and Kent Jones, plus the U.S. Air Force Max Impact Band and Honor Guard Drill Team, a night-pyro parachute demonstration and fireworks on the beach. Memorial Day Ceremonies, Monday. Many cities in South Florida are planning memorials, often with a presentation of colors, guest speakers and a wreath placing. Davie will also have a parade at 10:30 a.m. on Orange Drive, and Boca Raton is closing the day with a free concert featuring the Helmsmen and country artists the Shane Duncan Band at 6 p.m. at the Mizner Park Amphitheater.

Pérez Art Museum Miami Memorial Day BBQ, Monday, 1-4 p.m. Live music by garage rock band SunGhosts, barbecue food and refreshments for sale on the terrace, art-making with PAMM teaching artists, and a special appearance by Coast Guard Air Station Miami.
