Jaxson's Ice Cream holds contest to find the flavor of Broward

What flavor ice cream best represents Broward County?

That’s the question being asked by Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant in Dania Beach and the folks behind Broward County’s 100th anniversary. Starting Friday, April 24, Jaxson’s is launching a Facebook contest to create a new Broward 100 ice cream flavor.

“We’re really excited about this because we’re hoping people will be really creative,” says Shelly Turetzky, of the county’s office of public communications.

She’s already heard some folks say the flavor should represent our tropical subtropical climate with something such as Key lime. Others believe it should represent our diversity and include ingredients such as dulce de leche or guava.

“You never know how people see themselves and how people see the contest,” Turetzky says.

The decision will be left with the fine ice cream makers at Jaxson’s. The Facebook contest — enter at Facebook.com/BrowardCounty100 — will end at midnight June 5, with Jaxson’s announcing the winner June...

Sarasota son of Marcella Hazan wants to bottle his mom's sauce

Those of us without an Italian grandmother swear by the late Marcella Hazan’s cookbooks.

She is the doyenne of Italian cooking in America, much like Julia Child was the U.S. ambassador for French cuisine.

I remember interviewing Hazan almost 20 years ago when she was on tour in Chicago. Hazan smoked Marlboro Lights and sipped whiskey while we ate ribeyes and New York strips at one of downtowns’ best steakhouses. Steak was her idea.

Now, her Sarasota-based son, Giuliano Hazan, has started a Kickstarter campaign to bottle her famous tomato sauce.

I’ve made her sauce too many times to count.

Hazan is hoping to raise $48,500, enough to produce an initial run to introduce at the late June Fancy Food Show in New York.

Jack Nicklaus ice cream now at Winn-Dixie

At 21, golfer Jordan Spieth might be the youngest person to ever win The Masters.

But at 75, Jack Nicklaus still has it.

Nicklaus, who lives in North Palm Beach, participated in the 2015 Masters Par 3 Contest last week and on the fourth hole, hit a hole-in-one.

In golf, it’s called an ace.

He’s also hit an ace with his new line of Jack Nicklaus ice cream, now available at Winn-Dixie stores. The ice cream is available in seven flavors: Coffee & Donuts, Salted Caramel Toffee, Strawberry Lemonade, Triple Chocolate, Warm Spiced Butter Pecan, Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl and Homemade Vanilla.

At $1.99, it’s one of the least expensive by-the-pint ice creams around.

Celebrity chef stamps at the post office

Birthday cards and thank-you notes aside, I don’t use stamps very much these days.

But on a trip to the local post office, I was delighted to see Limited Edition Celebrity Chefs Forever stamps. I bought two 20-stamp panes. They were released last September, so I’m not sure how easy they’ll be to find. You can always order them online at USPS.com/stamps.

The five honored chefs are James Beard, Julia Child, Joyce Chen, Edna Lewis and Edward (Felipe) Rojas-Lombardi. They were chosen because they “revolutionized the nation’s understanding of food,” according to a post office press release. “By integrating international ingredients and recipes with American cooking techniques and influence, these chefs introduced new foods and flavors to the American culture.”

James Beard (1903–1985) hosted one of the first TV food programs in 1946. He was also a champion of local ingredients and American cooking styles, which he extolled in 22 cookbooks.. His home in Greenwich Village now houses the James...

Vote for Miami chefs in Food & Wine's people choice awards

Food & Wine magazine named its 2015 class of Best New Chefs this week. Not a single South Florida chef was included in the prestigious list that will see them featured in the magazine’s July issue and showcased at the 33rd annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen.

Now, the magazine is compiling a people’s choice list of the country’s most talented chefs with online voting taking place through April 8.

Up for the honor in the Gulf Coast category are two Miami chefs: Jose Mendin of The Pubbelly Restaurant Group and Deme Lomas of NIU Kitchen.

I have yet to dine at NIU, so my money’s on Mendin, who dazzles at the original Pubbelly plus Pubbelly Sushi, Barceloneta and L’echon Brasserie.

Nine South Florida restaurants, most in Miami, are among OpenTable.com’s list of 2015 Top 100 Hot Spot Restaurants in America.

I haven’t dined at all of them, but I’d say the five million everyday reviewers who used OpenTable.com to make their restaurant reservations did a very good job. Altogether, OpenTable.com represents 20,000 restaurants across the country.
