Miami Beach bar among best in the South

The Broken Shaker inside the Freehand Miami Hostel in Miami Beach is among Southern Living magazine’s top 20 best new bars in the South.

Divided into eight categories, The Broken Shaker is one of two entries in the Hotel Bars category. Don’t go here expecting a traditional, wood paneled, library of a bar.

The Broken Shaker is a gorgeous cubby hole right out of the 1950s. The best seats, however, are outside next to the pool. Vintage whicker and metal furniture is set up under lights strung between trees.

Mixologists Gabriel Orta and Elad Zvi are the pair behind The Shaker, which uses house-made syrups and herbs unique to South Florida.

Already this month, the bar was included in Food & Wine magazine’s best cocktail bars in the country.

I love the place. When so much of Miami Beach has been given over to bottle service, DJs, high heels and short skirts, The Broken Shaker is cool without trying.

Check out the entire list at SouthernLiving.com/bars. The Broken Shaker is the only South FLorida bar among the best 20 new bars, although other local spots are among the magazine's 100 best bars in the South.

Top craft-beer spots in South Florida

Maria Murriel, SouthFlorida.com It's clear the beer scene in South Florida has been heating up lately, and with the Funky Buddha Brewery now more than a year old, locals have lots of homegrown brews to kick back. But if you want to check out beer-bar vibes outside the brewery, head to these pubs.
