South Florida gets several nods in the list of restaurant and chef semifinalists announced today for the prestigious 2013 James Beard Foundation Awards.

The semifinalists were chosen from a more than 44,000 online entries. Final nominees will be announced March 18. Awards will be given May 6.

Best chef South: Clay Conley, Buccan, Palm Beach; Jeff McInnis, Yardbird Southern Table & Bar, Miami Beach; and Jose Mendin, Pubbelly, Miami Beach

Best new restaurant: Khong River House, Miami Beach (Check out on Friday for my review.)

Outstanding bar program: The Broken Shaker, Miami Beach

Outstanding pastry chef: Hedy Goldsmith, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Miami

Rising star chef of the year: Giorgio Rapicavoli, Eating House, Coral Gables

This is the second year in a row that Conley, McInnis and Goldsmith have been semifinalists. Goldsmith was a finalist last year. Likewise, this is the second yeard that John Kunkel, owner of 50 Eggs Inc., has been a semifinalist. He owns Khong River House and Yardbird Southern Table & Table, a 2012 semifinalist for best new restaurant.
