Three upcoming foodie fundraisers

For foodies, charity begins with three upcoming events where food is the focus of the fundraising.

The Sweet Soiree – The Science of Chocolate, 6-8 p.m., May 13, Museum of Discovery and Science, 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale, 954-467-6637, MODS.org. Friends of MODS partners with 2-1-1 Broward, the 24 hour helpline, to present a celebration of chocolate with chocolate inspired science demonstrations and presentations by museum educators and Greenacres-based Hoffman’s Chocolate. The evening starts with a champagne reception, specialty cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and coffee provided by Keurig. Tickets are $30 for Friends of MODS and museum members and $40 for non-members. “Hope Floats” Sidewalk Sale, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., May 16-May 18 at The Fresh Market locations across South Florida, TheFreshMarket.com. This is the 20th year that the North Carolina-based chain has held a sidewalk sale to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The stores will donate 100 percent of proceeds from sales of hot dogs, root beer floats and ice cream sundaes, regular and sugar-free. Each item costs just $2. To date, the grocer has raised nearly $4 million for JDRF through the Sidewalk Sale and the purchase of green paper sneakers. “The Fresh Market remains dedicated to our partnership with JDRF to raise awareness and critically needed funds for research related to type 1 diabetes,” says Craig Carlock, The Fresh Market’s president and CEO.

OBIEs: A Taste of South Florida, 7-10 p.m., May 30, Broward County Convention Center, 305-341-4701, OrangeBowl.org.  OBIEs is the short version of Orange Bowl Impact and Excellence Awards, which for the first year is being presented as culinary event with high profile chefs and restaurants. Headliner this year is chef Norman Van Aken, known as the founding father of New World Cuisine, and owner of Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Participants include: 3030 Ocean, Bulldog Barbecue and Burger, Barton G. Restaurant, Publix Aprons Cooking School, YOLO, S3, Shula’s Steakhouse and Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza. “Since 2000, the Orange Bowl has helped send more than 50 local high school seniors to college, provided millions back to some of the area’s most deserving causes and recognized some of South Florida’s most charitable and impactful residents,” says Eric Poms, Orange Bowl CEO. General admission tickets are $85. VIP tickets are $200.
