What started in 2007 with a three-hour walk-around restaurant tasting, has now grown into the five day Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival Dec. 13-17.
This year, 16 events will feature some 50 chefs — from South Florida and beyond — to our backyard.
David Sabin, festival organizer, says that while the South Beach Wine & Food Festival is the model for similar events, Palm Beach doesn’t even try to compete.
“We’re nothing like that,” he says. “Our price points reflect that. Our Saturday night event at the Four Seasons is $75. For an event like that at South Beach, even Burger Bash, they ask $350 per ticket.”
The Saturday, Dec. 14 event he’s speaking of is the Cypress High Tea Chef After Party featuring James Beard Award-winning Miami chef Michael Schwartz and his staff members, pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith and chef de cuisine Roel Alcudia. There will be cocktails, cold tea service, passed hors d'oeuvres, tea sandwiches a carving station and Goldsmith’s petit fours and macarons.
While many events are already sold out, there are still tickets available to Southern Comfort: A Hair of the Dog Experience at Swank Specialty Produce in Loxahatchee noon-3 p.m. Dec. 15. The $200 ticket features Lindsay Autry of Sundy House in Delray Beach; Timon Balloo of Sugarcane in Miami; Philadelphia chef Marc Vetri; James Petrakis, chef/ owner of The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder, in Winter Park; and Stephen Stryjewski, chef/owner of Cochon Restaurant in New Orleans’ Warehouse District. Chef Vetri will perform live music with songwriter/artist Phil Roy.
The $100 Grand Tasting Event Dec. 17 draws as many as 700 people to downtown Palm Beach where more than 30 chefs and restaurants will offer samples of their fare. Participants include Creekstone Farms, Eating House, Four Seasons Resort, HMF at The Breakers, Khong Riverhouse, PISTACHE French Bistro, Swine Southern Table & Bar, The Bazaar by Jose Andres, Virginia Philip Wine Shop & Academy and Whole Foods Market.
All proceeds from the festival go to five charities: American Red Cross, Palm Beaches – Treasure Coast Region; Feeding South Florida; James Beard Foundation, Share Our Strength; and Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
