Do you have an original recipe for a dessert that wows your Thanksgiving guests every year? Was it passed on from your grandmother? Or was it one of those happy surprises that came together at the last minute the year the dessert almost didn't get served?
Thanksgiving is the biggest cooking holiday of the year and, for most us, that means dessert. Whether it be a traditional pumpkin treat or a uniquely South Florida take on the holiday — Key lime anyone? — we want your recipes.
For the second year in a row, we’re searching for your best recipes from South Florida home cooks as part of the Sun Sentinel Blue Ribbon Thanksgiving Dessert Bake-Off.
Last year, the big winner was Judy Avey of Fort Lauderdale, who took the prize for her pumpkin bread pudding with maple-caramel sauce.
This year, Publix will give the first-place winner a $250 gift card. First runner-up receives a $100 gift card.
Here’s how it works:
Log onto SunSentinel.com/dessert and fill out the online form. It will require you to type in your recipe and additional information.
You can also mail your recipe to Sun Sentinel Blue Ribbon Thanksgiving Dessert Bake-Off, Food Section, 500 E. Broward Blvd., #900, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33394. You must include your name, a daytime phone number and your city of residence.
Deadline is Oct. 26.
We’ll pick six finalists based on creativity and recipe clarity. Finalists will be contacted by Oct. 31.
If you’re chosen as one of the six finalists, you must bring your dessert to the final judging bake-off from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 at Publix Aprons Cooking School, 1181 S. University Drive, Plantation.
You will present your dessert to a panel of four judges, including Aprons’ resident chef Wes Bonner and Sun Sentinel food and dining writer John Tanasychuk. Winners will be evaluated on dessert appearance, taste and creativity.
Winners and highlights from the event, including photos and the six finalists’ recipes, will appear in the Sun Sentinel Food section on Nov. 15 and will also be available, plus video, on SunSentinel.com and SouthFlorida.com.Copyright © 2015, South Florida
