Video: Oceanside Grocers craft-cocktail bar opens in Delray Beach

Whatever you do, don’t call Oceanside Grocers a speakeasy. That will set the owners of the new bar in downtown Delray Beach on edge.

“I don’t know if I’m going to allow you to use the word ‘speakeasy,’ ” co-owner Challo Schott says. “But if we could compromise [with] something like ‘hidden haunt,’ I think that would be a little bit more accurate. If you try to do something for the locals by the locals, you need to make it a little bit more difficult.”

From the outside, Oceanside Grocers looks like a general store. And when you step through the door, the craft-cocktail bar has a throwback design aesthetic. But the drinks, the DJs and the live acts to come are decidedly modern-day. The bar, which is also called the O.G., will also sell local goods and crafts made by Delray Beach artists and artisans.

“We’re really focused on the locals in the area,” co-owner Brian Rosen explains. “I think this is going to be a local-driven spot. We’re working with a number of great … businesses here in Delray Beach. We’ll be selling their items to the apartments around. We’ll be using them ourselves, at the bar. We’re really focused on talking about the people behind the companies that are the OG’s of Delray Beach.”

Oceanside Grocers is located just a few blocks south of Atlantic Avenue at 160 SE Second Ave., in Delray Beach. For more information, call 561-270-7600 or go to OGdelray.com.
