At Funky Buddha Brewery's birthday bash, a wort of pure imagination

The whimsical mural on Funky Buddha Brewery’s taproom wall offers a line from English poet Arthur O'Shaughnessy, famously used in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”: “We are the music makers / And we are the dreamers of dreams.”

Willy Wonka, played by the late Gene Wilder, says this line to the confused, golden-ticket-carrying families touring his chocolate factory, perhaps to explain the utter absurdity of candy-shrinking machines, edible wallpaper and Oompa Loompas.

More “Willy Wonka” references appear on four craft-beer bottles debuting this Saturday, June 3, during Funky Buddha’s Beer Factory Bash, which marks the brewery’s fourth anniversary in Oakland Park. Each beer nods to the spoiled brats who meet their silly demise in the film: Save Some Room for Later, a German chocolate cake-flavored ale; Juicing Room, a blueberry-infused imperial stout; Boy That’s Great Stuff!, a hoppy India Pale Ale; and I Want It Now!, a German-style, sour wheat ale punched with mango and passionfruit.

“We wanted to showcase our imaginative side for our birthday,” says John Linn, Funky Buddha’s brand director. “We kind of envision our guests are being [Charlie Bucket, the film’s protagonist], and these beers represent the other kids who misbehave.”

The Buddha’s anniversary beers will join 32 other rare and limited-release suds offered at the daylong bash. Unlike last year’s bash at Jaco Pastorius Park behind the brewery, the taproom and parking lot will host the party, Linn says.

Festivities will be spread out over three days instead of one: a Golden Ticket Tasting paired beers with dishes on June 2, while a Pure Imagination Brunch ($75) on Sunday, June 4 will include a buffet-style brunch and three beer tickets.

Noteworthy brews include the coveted Maple Bacon Coffee Porter; No Crusts, a peanut butter and jelly ale; Jitterbug, an imperial cream ale with flaked oats, vanilla and coffee; the Fluffer, a double brown ale infused with peanut and marshmallow; and Hawaiican Coffee, an imperial stout blended with Kona coffee and aged in tequila barrels.

The Funky Buddha Beer Factory Bash will take place 11:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at 1201 NE 38th St., in Oakland Park. Admission is free, but each beer ticket costs $5. Call 954-440-0046 or go to FunkyBuddhaBrewery.com.
