Play tiki bingo for a cause at the Mai-Kai

Tiki Bingo at the Mai-Kai (@TheMaiKai) this Thursday

The beautiful Mai-Kai Restaurant is a historic landmark in Fort Lauderdale serving Polynesian fare with flair. From floor to ceiling, front to back, this restaurant feels like an island oasis. Happy hour is served every day from 5 to 7 p.m., with 50 percent-off appetizers and most drinks.

This Thursday, Sept. 15, the Mai-Kai will offer tiki bingo with an extended happy hour until 8 p.m.

The monthly tiki bingo in the Samoa room is hosted by the Gumbo Limbo Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Moai, a society whose aim is "to spread the aloha spirit," as its Facebook page says, by bringing like-minded individuals together to appreciate tiki culture. The next one is Thursday, Oct. 13.

The Gumbo Limbo chapter is named after the indigenous South Florida tree. "Move the bark and the skin turns bright red, kind of like our tourists do when they get here," Gumbo Limbo's past president Chip Kerr jokes.

While the Gumbo Limbo chapter is a social organization, its members raise money for South Florida animal charities, which is why it organized the monthly bingo event at the Mai-Kai.

"Most of our members don't have children, or our children are grown," Kerr says, "so we've adopted the local animal charities as our children."

Proceeds from tiki bingo will benefit the Humane Society of Broward County. Past events have helped the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton, which focuses on sea life, and the Miami-Dade Reef Guard Association, which protects coral reefs off Miami-Dade's coast with mooring buoys.

Tiki bingo game cards are $1 each. Winners receive prizes ranging from T-shirts to Mauna Loa chocolates.

The Mai-Kai will offer its regular happy hour, which is 50 percent-off appetizers and most drinks, excluding bottles of wine, champagne, sidewinders fang and the mystery drink. The long list of appetizers includes items such as Shanghai chicken, Cantonese fried shrimp and charred octopus. Some of the most popular cocktails include the Mai-Tai (with orchid) and the Barrel O' Rum.

Tiki bingo will start 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at the Mai-Kai, 3599 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale. Bingo cards cost $1. Call 954-563-3272 or go to MaiKai.com.
