Miami Beach's Matador Bar hosting bartenders from Brooklyn's Leyenda

Every third Thursday of the month, a new bar pops up in South Florida. Well, the bar isn’t exactly new. It’s just new to South Florida, and for one night only. The Matador Bar inside the Miami Beach Edition Hotel hosts this monthly bar takeover. The next one will take place on Thursday, April 20.

“What we wanted to do was get a bunch of the top bars in the country and industry peers to come down to Miami and experience all the great things that are happening from a cocktail perspective,” says Josh Wagner, the Edition Hotel’s director of entertainment and culture.

For this event, two bartenders from Brooklyn’s Leyenda will create cocktails using Latin liquors. Time Out Magazine ranked Leyenda in the top 50 bars in New York in 2016. Ivy Mix, who was named “Best American Bartender” at the Tales of the Cocktail festival in 2015 , and mixologist Ryan Liloia will create five cocktails from Leyenda’s new menu. The drinks include the Sonámbula, with jalapeño-infused tequila, lemon, chamomile syrup, Peychaud’s Bitters and mole; and the Port Light, with bourbon, lemon juice, grenadine, vanilla syrup and passionfruit purée. Leyenda’s cocktails will cost $12, though bartenders will be giving away samples. Drinks from Matador Bar’s regular menu will also be available. Those cost $14-$16.

As with every monthly takeover, Matador’s staff will be behind the bar assisting the guest bartenders, who will serve drinks for three to four hours.

“We have a nice conversation with [the bartenders] about the vibe that they like to provide in their own bars,” Wagner says.

Matador Bar Monthly Takeover will take place 9 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at 2901 Collins Ave., in Miami Beach. Call 786-257-4600 or go to MatadorRoom.com.
