Turnover Chain-inspired beer on sale in South Florida taprooms

The Miami Hurricanes’ Turnover Chain has inspired its own beer, and it’s now being served inside J. Wakefield Brewing’s Miami taproom.

Chains, an India pale ale formerly called Turnover when J. Wakefield announced the sports-themed brew in November, celebrates the Hurricanes’ 10-carat Cuban link chain used to reward defensive players for forcing an interception or touchdown.

Since it was introduced at the Hurricanes’ season opener, the Turnover Chain has become a viral sensation, with ’Canes players sporting the flashy 36-inch, 10-karat gold chain around their necks this football season.

“The chain is a great incentive to drive the ’Canes defense to score more turnovers, so we rushed to make a beer that celebrates our great team,” says Wakefield, also the Wynwood brewery’s head brewer.

Chains is a Northeast-style IPA infused with a cocktail of citrusy hops, which gives the brew its mango, passionfruit and pineapple notes, Wakefield says. The beer’s color? Golden yellow, just like the chain. Wakefield brewed the IPA in partnership with former Miami Hurricanes linebacker D.J. Williams (2001-2004), although the beer isn’t affiliated with the college team.

Since Chains debuted in his taproom on Dec. 15, Wakefield says the brewery has already sold half its 990-gallon batch.

“It’s flying off the shelves, so to speak,” Wakefield says. “It’s probably the best-selling and best-tasting Northeast IPA we’ve ever made.”

Fans can even drink Chains at Hard Rock Stadium, which will serve the beer when the Miami Hurricanes face the Wisconsin Badgers on Dec. 30 in the Orange Bowl. The beer will be served in the taprooms in sections 117 and 142.

In Broward and Palm Beach counties, Chains will be served on draft (cost varies by bar) at Laser Wolf and Tap 42 in Fort Lauderdale, the Pub in Pembroke Pines and Biergarten Boca Raton. Only the J. Wakefield Brewing taproom will offer four-pack cans ($18).

Chains is now on sale at J. Wakefield Brewing, 120 NW 24th St., in Miami. A four-pack of 16-ounce cans of Chains costs $18 in the taproom. Call 786-254-7779, or go to JWakefieldBrewing.com.
