Beg For More Izakaya

Three years after the original Beg for More opened in Fort Lauderdale, Bangkok native Surissada Sothiwanwongse has opened a Japanese and Thai eatery in the former Off The Ave Food & Spirits. But this one emphasizes izakaya-style Japanese tapas with a menu that is 80 percent different.

“We’ve created the place to make it look like a little Japan with light red and soft white color tones of lighting, along with upbeat music,” Sothiwanwongse says. “We’re trying to make this a fun concept and good place to hang out with friends. It will make you feel like you are in Japan.”

Highlights include crispy bok choy ($7), 16 yakitori selections ($3-$6), a dozen gyoza dumplings for sharing ($19) and six-hour short rib kare with curry sauce ($32). Jumbo shrimp pad Thai is her mother’s recipe ($26).

The menu overflows with 35 specialty cocktails, such as the Flamingo with sake, grapefruit, ginger and green tea ($16) and the Tokyo Local with 12-year Japanese whisky, lime, cucumber and mint ($24).

Dinner is served nightly until 2 a.m. amid rustic wood, brick walls and a montage of vintage Japanese paintings. Red lanterns sway in the breeze from the door to sidewalk seating.
