Pucker up June 7-9: SourFest at the Sybarite Pig

Sour beers rose in popularity in Florida late last year. One of South Florida's upcoming breweries, J. Wakefield Brewing, has made a name for itself making a tropical type of berliner -- typically a sour, wheat-based beer made in Germany.

Jonathan Wakefield, the brewer, has made passionfruit, guava and raspberry sours, and collaborated with Tampa's Cigar City Brewing Company on some styles. His beers will make up some of the lineup at the Sybarite Pig's first SourFest, happening June 7 through 9.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, the Boca Raton gastropub will tap the Petrus Aged Pale bruin, a Belgian sour style typically found at craft-beer stores, and Cigar City's limited-edition Stiftung berliner.

Saturday will be Wakefield's day: Two JWB berliners will be tapped at 7 p.m. Expect acidity and coy sweetness.

Sunday's star tapping will be Mikkeller's It's Alive Belgian strong ale. My problem with this style name and others like it (farmhouse ale, saison, American strong ale) is that they don't say much about the flavor and character of the beer. And these days, brewers are crossing so many lines with flavor profiles and using so many ingredient combinations that I feel it matters little what kind of beer they try to peg their concoctions to.

So, It's Alive is a tart beer. It fits nicely with the event's theme.

It's free to attend SourFest at the Pig, at 20642 S.R. 7. For a full tap list, see the bar's Facebook event page.
