Liza Santana, owner of a Coral Gables public relations company, says she’s not competing with this weekend’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival. She calls her Saturday night culinary and music experience, Eats & Beats, an alternative for young locals who can’t afford the price of the festival.
“From every great idea you get a spinoff,” says Santana. “Unfortunately, a lot of different brands and restaurants can’t participate in the festival. They’re not Food Network chefs, but still prepare amazing food.”
Tickets for Eats & Beats start at $75 and go to $250. The ticket gets attendees four floors of food, sweets, cocktails and wine at more than 40 different restaurants and brands inside the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District. The beats part of the evening features DJs and live musicians chosen by the Miami Heat’s DJ Irie.
Why hold Eats & Beats on the same weekend as the 13-year-old festival? “We feel like that foodie thing is in the air,” says Santana. “The spirit of people knowing this week everyone is about going out and dining. There’s a built-in audience for South Beach Wine & Food Festival.”
Lee Schrager, founder and director of the South Beach festival, says what’s happened with food outside of the festival isn’t unlike the art events that occur outside of the official Art Basel show every December.
“Much like Art Basel has grown into a series of independently thrown events, we've experienced the same thing happening more and more pre, post and during the Festival,” Schraeger said in an email. “It's great that everyone is so excited about the Wine & Food Festival that people want to do more and find more ways to celebrate the weekend and highlight our cities great culinary talent.”
