Riverside Market says: Relax, just drink it

If all goes according to plan at Fort Lauderdale's Riverside Market and Café on Saturday, owner Julian Siegel expects the craft-beer-quaffing public to don vintage Spring Break beachwear: swimming trunks, 1980s hairstyles and, he hopes, not a single "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt.

"Please, no. It's a scarred memory from the '80s," Siegel says with a laugh. "Nothing related to Frankie Goes to Hollywood."

On Saturday night, nearly a dozen teams of savvy local brewers will offer their sudsiest beers for sampling during the Riverside Market's Spring Break Throwback Home Brew Competition. Teams, which include Midnight City Brewing, 2 Live Brews, Angry Union and others, are entering their hoppy creations in exchange for bragging rights and prizes that include gift cards, swag bags and craft-beer "bomber" containers.

Any patron or contestant caught sporting the best throwback attire will also collect prizes, including Riverside Market T-shirts and six-packs, Siegel says.

The folks responsible for judging the brews are Siegel and his wife, Lisa; Funky Buddha Brewery founder Ryan Sentz; Lauren Bowen of Harpoon Brewery; and blogger Doug Fairall. They'll arbitrate categories that include IPA, Double IPA, stout, pale, amber, Belgian, tutti-frutti, brown, malt beverage, porter, lager, people's choice and judge's choice.

"We always highlight the local beers, but now it's time to highlight the local brewers," Siegel says. "You'll know why when you drink. You take one sip, and you want to put a monetary value to the glass."

The Spring Break Throwback Home Brew Competition will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Riverside Market and Cafe, 608 SW 12th Ave., in Fort Lauderdale. It costs $10 to sample the brews. Call 954-358-8333 or go to
