Maria Murriel, SouthFlorida.com Earlier this week, Miami mixologists Julio Cabrera and Michael Parish competed in the United States Bartenders' Guild Bartender of the Year shake-off in New York city. On the second day of the competition, Cabrera of the Regent Cocktail Club tied for first place with New York's Jeff Bell. The Bartender of the Year is chosen to represent the U.S. in the international finale aboard the Azamara Club cruise in July. So Bell and Cabrera had to enter a sudden-death cocktail match, after which Bell, who works at the trendy speakeasy Please Don't Tell, was declared winner. Regardless, Cabrera's participation is a win for Miami and South Florida, where mixology is just starting to leave a mark on cocktail menus. To face off against a master mixer from one of New York's most celebrated cocktail joints does enough for Cabrera's reputation and South Florida's booze vibe. The Miamian did win the food pairing segment of the challenge. Click through for photos of Cabrera's performance.
