Local craft beer for a cause at M.I.A.'s Hop Into Action fundraiser

The beer guys of South Florida will show their soft side this Saturday, July 6, at M.I.A. Brewing Company's Hop Into Action fundraiser benefiting a pair of newborn twins from Orlando who lost their mother shortly after birth.

Local brewers and beer collectors have been donating rare bottles from their private stashes to be raffled off during a silent auction at the event. Those donations will benefit the family of babies Zoe and Amelia Boyce. Family friend Gene Devaney wrote a plea on the beer rating site BeerAdvocate.com for their father, Dave, who also has two young sons from a previous marriage.

Aside from the chance to win bottles of Cigar City's Hunahpu's Imperial Stout from various years, Hop Into Action will offer the public a free taste of some of South Florida's breweries yet to come.

Some of the locals in attendance will be Gravity Brewlab, Wynwood Brewing Company, Fourth Age Brewing and Beer Snob Ales. The last two I haven't mentioned much previously, but they are a couple of those small breweries you can't yet visit but whose brews you can try at events like these.

Devaney organized an online auction-fundraiser without Boyce's knowledge. Devaney will be at the event Saturday to add some rare brews to the pot, and encourages anyone who can't make it to donate via PayPal to forameliaandzoe@gmail.com.

Until Aug. 1, donors will get the chance to win beers from a list separate from the event's. Devaney secured some kick-ass prizes from Cigar City Brewing's VP. Check the link to his BeerAdvocate.com post above for the full list.

Hop Into Action will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at 10400 NW 33rd St., Suite 150, Miami.
