Miami just got a whole lot cheesier.
On Tuesday, Ms. Cheezious opened its doors in Coral Gales to its second brick-and-mortar restaurant.
The popular grilled cheese spot opened as a food truck in 2010. A second food truck was added to the fleet a year into fruition. After continued success wheeling around South Florida, Ms. Cheezious opened a restaurant in February 2015. Since then, Ms. Cheezious has gone on to win nationwide popularity and awards from foodies and online outlets like TheDailyMeal.com, whose readers voted Ms. Cheezious as "America's best food truck."
"We actually live down the road, so Coral Gables is our home, and we've come to realize it's the home and workplace for many others too," says owner Brian Mullins. "Since we already have one restaurant in [Miami Modern on Biscayne], and our trucks travel throughout Miami but are often called upon for private catering, we wanted to bring the cheese a little further down south."
As the name suggests, the restaurant specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches, but has a full bar offering local craft beers, wine and cocktails, much like its flagship that's just north of Miracle Mile on Biscayne Boulevard (7418 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). Taps rotate, but include beers from local breweries such as Oakland Park's Funky Buddha, Doral's M.I.A. Beer Company and Wynwood Brewing Company.
Ms. Cheezious combines ingredients like apples, crabs, and maple syrup to create interesting grilled cheese combinations such as the barbecue tempeh melt with organic barbecue tempeh, jack cheese, tomatoes and arugula on sourdough bread or the Frito pie melt with house chili, American cheese, jalapeños, onions and Fritos on sourdough bread. Both of those sandwiches are just $7.
The Coral Gables Ms. Cheezious offers hand-spun milkshakes, which change every few weeks. Right now Ms. Cheezious is spinning the midnight snack, a chocolate shake with chocolate-covered potato chips, a chocolate and peanut-dipped pretzel, caramel corn, whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles as well as the pastelito, a guava-vanilla shake with whipped cream, guava syrup, and a mini pastelito. Both are $8.
