Maria Murriel, SouthFlorida.com UPDATE: The Funky Buddha Brewery opens in Oakland Park Saturday, June 2. The first few photos were taken days before its grand opening. Click through to see construction shots and images of the Boca Raton lounge. Broward County's first brewery will also be South Florida's largest: The Funky Buddha's new industrial microbrewery in downtown Oakland Park will have a 30-barrel brewing system, double the capacity of most first-time brewery entrepreneurs. Brewmaster at the original Boca Raton brewpub Ryan Sentz, and his brother KC, broke ground on the OP location late last year. They hope to finish construction by this April. I stopped by the site last week to see how they were getting along, and my takeaway is: WHOA. Place is huge. Last November, managers at Avery in Colorado told me their systems were "small," but when I mentioned South Florida breweries usually run on 15 barrels (BBL), they scoffed as their jaws dropped -- we tend to run small here. Sentz says he decided to go with the 30-BBL system after others in the industry advised him he would soon outgrow the 15-BBL and regret going for the smaller size. Sentz and his brother pulled out all the stops -- the Oakland Park tap room alone is twice the size of the Funky Buddha Lounge in Boca. Click through for some progress shots.
