Eat lots of ribs at Tony Roma's to win ... more ribs!

Welcome to the latest edition of Hot Plates, your weekly guide to food events around South Florida. Competitive eaters, get your bibs — and Tums — ready. July 31 is the last day to sign up for Tony Roma's annual rib-eating contest, to be held locally on Aug. 25 in Sunny Isles Beach to mark National Baby Back Rib Day.

Competitors will be given a 4-pound tray of baby back ribs, with a 3-minute time limit. The first to finish their tray will be the winner and receive free ribs for a year at Tony Roma’s, organizers say. If nobody finishes, trays are weighed and whoever eats the most is declared the winner. Last year, the regional winner consumed just over three pounds, edging the runner-up by two ounces.

Those interested in taking part can fill out an entry form today at any Tony Roma’s location (no purchase necessary). The Sunny Isles Beach Tony Roma’s is located at 18050 Collins Ave., 305-932-7907.

The restaurant also will stage a beer-stein holding contest for those 21 and older on Aug. 25. No advance registration is necessary, and the contest is open to those in the rib-eating contest. Whoever holds up their stein the longest will win a $50 gift certificate. Prost — and hoist!
