Bourbon tasting at Steak 954 for UM neurology department fundraiser sells $1,000 tickets

If you've been waiting for a chance to sip on the nearly unattainable 23-year-aged bourbon made by Pappy Van Winkle, Steak 954 at the W Fort Lauderdale will offer it to you on May 23, but it will cost you a stack.

The tasting lineup is filled with old whiskeys: Pappy Van Winkle's 12, 15, 20 and 23 year reserves; Jefferson's Ocean, of which only 250 bottles were made; Willett 21-year cask-strength bourbon, priced at $250 per bottle; and others.

Most names on the list are in that price range, so the $1,000 could be justified by the 11 roughly $250 bourbons up for tasting at the event.

But it's a long shot to try to snag a seat; there are only 25 available at Ironically, the tasting is a fundraiser for the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine's neurology department.

Will they study the effects of decades-old corn hooch on the brain afterward? The event's official name is Bourbon on the Brain, after all. But are the 25 attendees inadvertent volunteers for a study?
