Miami Beach may be known for its beaches and babes, but the city just snagged bragging rights as the home of the "Best New American Cocktail Bar."
Now in it's tenth year, The Spirited Awards have been crowning the best in the service industry since 2002. At their spirits industry festival, Tales of the Cocktail, in New Orleans on Saturday, July 23, 110 judges picked Sweet Liberty Drinks & Company for "Best New American Cocktail Bar." Owner and bartender John Lermayer was also a finalist for "Best American Bartender."
"The whole backbone of our business is accessible luxury. We sit under the shadow of these multi-billion dollar hotels that attempt to do world-class drinks and food, and we feel we could exceed them in the product that we offer," says Lermayer, about his bar that has been only open since October of last year. "We're more approachable. You can come in here in flip-flops and get a drink or a plate of food and it'll be just as good for half-the-price that you can get at one of these major hotels."
This is the second time South Florida takes home awards. The Broken Shaker won last year for "Best American Hotel Bar."
The bar intends to give service-industry people a place to go after work on late nights. Drinks, food, music, service and atmosphere are the five pillars Sweet Liberty works on every day.
"If there's anybody that appreciates what we do, it's bartenders, servers, DJs. We firmly believe that when these people get a night off, they deserve to have these luxuries," says Lermayer. "The bar has a soul. It's different. It's a platform where people can be their best self, for the guests and for the employees."
Sweet Liberty is located at 237-B 20th St., in Miami Beach. It is open 4 p.m.- 5 a.m. Mondays though Sundays. Call 305-763-8217 or go to mysweetliberty.com.
