Possibly the most-awaited event in Florida's beer community, Cigar City Brewing's Hunahpu's Day is a day-long release party for the Tampa brewery's Hunahpu's Imperial Stout. Beer fans from across the country fly in for the event, this year on March 9, and the brewery's website has a detailed protocol for purchases that day.
This year, South Florida brewers will represent by bringing their products to Tampa Bay, which is why I'm ecstatic to go.
Per Cigar City's Hunahpu's Day draft list, these are some of the familiar brewers attendees will sample:
Due South's Island Hopper Double IPA and the Desert Inn Rye IPA, brewed in collaboration with CCB.
The Funky Buddha's Pineapple Hop Gun, a treatment of the Buddha's flagship IPA, and the Starfruit Berliner.
Our less-established names are going big:
Gravity Brewlab will pour some complex stuff -- there's the Godzilla Smokey Sour Ale,
Kobra Kai Thai Chili Berliner Weisse,
Aguanile Rum-barrel-aged Cortadito Porter,
Smokey O'Hoolahan Barrel-aged Irish Dry Stout, and
What's Puckerin' Gilbert's Grape.
And J Wakefield Brewing by Jonathan Wakefield, who's been collaborating with Cigar City, will bring his Dr. Zarkov Sour Ale,
Emmit Fitz-Hume Cabernet Sauvignon Berliner,
Master Blaster Porter,
Mate Bliss Brown,
Miami Madness, and
Rebengas Fruta Bomba Berliner.
Gravity is one of Miami's up-and-coming breweries, and Jonathan Wakefield is a well-known former homebrewer who pours at local festivals.
Wakefield, Gravity and the Funky Buddha also have brews on a special-tappings list, which you can see at CigarCityBrewing.com.
