Beer goes with everything at Brooklyn Brewery Mash

Brooklyn parties with Miami this week during the The Brooklyn Brewery Mash, a fusion of beer, food, readings and music.

"Unfortunately with beer, most people only think of it as the yellow liquid on the table, but we see it as the liquid that brings together all these relationship and connections," said Andrew Gerson, the house chef of Brooklyn Brewery.

Gerson, who often visits his grandmother in Fort Lauderdale, was eager to pair Latin flavors with the brews. He worked with local chefs such as Miguel Aguilar from Wynwood Kitchen on pairings like red snapper crudo with Sorachi Ace, a beer with lemon verbana notes.

Miami is just one of 25 cities involved with this first-time festival, which has been visiting a variety of Miami locations for innovative events. The festival supports Slow Food USA, a global, grassroots organization that seeks to preserve and share local foods and food cultures.

Miami is last in the tour, after such cities as Austin, New Orleans and Nashville. This weekend, the festival will feature a beer and food pairing class with Gerson at Miami's Total Wine & More, a book reading at Bakehouse Art Complex, and a slideshow by local photographers and artists at Gramps Bar.

"This will be a celebration of Miami that happens to be delicious," said Gerson.
