Are the best fish and chips in the United States really found at a British-style chain pub in Pembroke Pines? For a discounted price of $7.50 on Wednesday, April 11, you can judge for yourself.
The Pub, 237 SW 145th Terrace, recently was declared the winner of a fish and chips contest sponsored by the British brewer of Old Speckled Hen beer. The Pub will host a celebration and award ceremony featuring half-priced fish and chips, music and prizes from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The Pub beat 100 other competitors, with five finalists emerging from online voting. A judging panel from Greene King Brewery traveled to the States to taste the fish and chips from the finalists, and the Pub emerged victorious by scoring 105 points (out of a maximum 110 points). The dishes were judged on batter consistency, fish freshness, perfect chip texture and how well the dish complemented Old Speckled Hen, which comes in at a relatively lightweight 3.5 percent alcohol volume.
At the Pub, hefty pieces of haddock are coated and fried in a classic batter and served with fries, coleslaw and housemade tartar sauce. The Pub has 12 locations in five states, with other Florida outposts in Naples, Tampa and Orlando.
In a press release, the Pub Group owner Nick Sanders says he was “thrilled” the restaurant achieved the honor. "Our team works diligently every day to bring an authentic British pub experience … to every guest,” Sanders says. “An award like this means we must be doing something right."
