Welcome to the Eat Beat Newsletter. And welcome to the heart of South Florida's unpredictable winter season. Depending on the day you might be hot, sweaty and craving ice cream or cold, clad in a sweater and needing soup. Fortunately, we've got you covered.
With the weekend forecast calling for some chilly nights it is the perfect time to simmer a vat of soup. For rib-sticking goodness you can't do much better than mushroom barley, and You Asked For It correspondent Claire Perez tracked down the recipe from Ben's Kosher Deli of New York, which has a location west of Boca Raton.
Events: Isn't it wonderful that we can enjoy frozen desserts in January? Outside? The Ice Cream We Love festival will bring 18 frozen-treat vendors to the courtyard of the Bal Harbour Shops this weekend and my colleague Phillip Valys has the scoop ... Another outdoor option on tap Saturday is the Maple Bacon Coffee Porter festival at Funky Buddha Brewery in Oakland Park. A fleet of food trucks and items from Funky Buddha's food counter will be available for those who want more than a liquid lunch ... All three South Florida Truluck's restaurants (Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Miami/Brickell) will hold a $150 four-course Duckhorn wine dinner on Jan. 26 ... The Riverwalk Chili Cook Off takes place Jan. 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at Esplanade Park in Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $5 and includes samples from multiple chili competitors ... Tickets are now on sale for the Key West Food and Wine Festival (Jan. 24-28), the South Beach Wine and Food Festival (Feb. 21-25), Burger Beast's Hamburger House Party at Magic City Casino (March 10) and the Las Olas Wine and Food Festival (April 20).
Speaking of kosher restaurants west of Boca, I went to one-year-old Ditmas Kitchen for my latest review. I awarded it three stars, pleasanty surprised to find a restaurant that dispels stereotypes about kosher dining with creative takes on meat, vegetable and sushi dishes. I also enjoyed one of the best restaurant steaks of the past year, a seared, family-size $85 bone-in rib steak with a delectable crust cooked perfectly to the ordered medium-rare. A tender, juicy steak at a kosher restaurant? Who knew? But don't try going on a Friday night. The restaurant is closed Fridays and has limited late Saturday hours in accordance with the Jewish sabbath.
This is my favorite food item (and headline) of the week. Homer Price, a self-described extreme doughnut lover, has opened Doughboy in Boca Raton. He really should have named it D'oh!-boy, but I suppose he might have heard from attorneys from "The Simpsons." Mmm, doughnuts.
The Aventura Mall has been raising its food game with expanded food offerings and a new food court, and correspondent Susan Bryant has details on Cvi.che 105's new restaurant at the mall, the local ceviche chain's third location. And if you also ride the towering new 93-foot spiral slide at the mall, I would highly recommend doing that before -- and not after -- your meal.

Bakery of France has introduced new menus at its two cafes in Boca Raton. [More]
