Hot Plates: Orange Bowl food celebration, dining deals for teachers and moms

Welcome to the latest edition of Hot Plates, your weekly guide to upcoming food events and restaurant promotions around South Florida. If you have not made Mother’s Day reservations for this Sunday, May 13, be prepared for long waits. National Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 8, and deals maven Doreen Christensen has the lowdown on a dozen discounts for educators. The hottest plate of all this week — for moms, teachers and anyone who likes good food and good causes — can be found on Friday, May 11, at the annual Orange Bowl Food and Wine Celebration.

It takes place at the Broward County Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale. More than 30 South Florida restaurants and dozens of wineries and breweries are scheduled to take part in the charity event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. for those with VIP tickets ($225 each) and 7:30 p.m. for those with general admission tickets ($95 each).

The Orange Bowl Committee does more than stage an annual college football game during the holiday season. It also raises money for charities such as Special Olympics Florida, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and the Orange Bowl Leadership Academy through events such as these. Chefs Janine Booth and Jeff McInnis, who run Stiltsville Fish Bar in Miami Beach and recently got engaged on ABC’s “The Chew,” will serve as celebrity chefs. Charlie DeLucca Jr., longtime South Florida youth golf instructor, will be honored with the Keith Tribble Community Service Excellence Award.

Restaurants scheduled to participate include Beaker & Gray, Boatyard, Bolay, Burger and Beer Joint, Casa D’Angelo, Cooper’s Hawk, Glass & Vine, Grille 401, The Matador Room, Ms. Cheezious, NYY Steak, Point Royal, Rocco’s Tacos, Rooftop, the Rusty Pelican, S3, Tarpon River Brewing, Terra Mare, Wynwood Parlor and YOLO.

The event includes food, open bar, entertainment, raffle drawings and complimentary gift bag. For tickets and information, call 305-341-4701.

Guest chefs at Valentino: A dinner series with visiting chefs continues at Valentino Cucina and adjoining One Door East restaurant, 620 S. Federal Highway, in Fort Lauderdale. On Tuesday, May 8, Ricardo Chaneton, former chef de cuisine of the two-Michelin-star restaurant Mirazur in Menton, France will be featured at Valentino ($150 per person, plus tax and tip). On Wednesday, May 9, multiple chefs including Clay Conley of Buccan in Palm Beach and Timon Balloo of Sugarcane Raw Bar and Grill in Miami will collaborate with Giovanni Rocchio on a five-course Asian journey at One Door East ($150 per person, plus tax and tip).To book a seat, call 954-523-5767.

Free dessert will also be available to moms who know the secret password posted on the eatery’s social media accounts later this week.

Summer specials: James Beard Award-winning chef Mark Militello is back as consulting chef at Josie’s Ristorante, 1602 S. Federal Highway, in Boynton Beach, and starting Monday, May 14, the restaurant will launch summer promotions including 20 percent off all checks Sundays through Thursdays; Meatball Mondays featuring $2 meatballs and half-price martinis; $10.99 large cheese pizzas on Mondays and Tuesdays; and extended happy hours daily, 2-7 p.m. and 9 p.m.-midnight.
