Three South Florida mixologists are cutting short the days when mojitos were the area’s largest export to cocktail culture.
John Lermayer of the Regent Cocktail Club was nominated for American bartender of the year in Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards, while Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta’s Broken Shaker bar got a nod for best American cocktail bar.
Tales of the Cocktail is the nation’s largest drink-industry convention, held yearly in New Orleans. It’s an internationally renowned affair, and the master mixers’ establishments were also nominated for world titles: The Regent, at the Gale Hotel in Miami Beach, is up for world’s best hotel bar. The Broken Shaker, at the Freehand Miami Hostel also on the beach, is up for world’s best new bar.
“The Florida Room is pretty much credited with starting a cocktail movement in Miami,” Lermayer, 40, said. “But I’ve never had a personal nomination. It’s a little overwhelming… there are some really great bartenders on that list.”
The winners will be announced at the TOTC convention this July. Until then, see how Miami is becoming a cocktail destination at these tourist-free beach spots.
Order a rattlesnake at the Regent, with rye whiskey, lemon juice and absinthe. At the Broken Shaker, any version of the old fashioned will do.
