Happy hour with David Blaine

Friday happy hours provide an opportunity to let the week's stress disappear. But this Friday, happy hour will be only a part of the hocus-pocus at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

That's because magician-illusionist David Blaine will be on the loose.

Blaine will perform from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Seminole Paradise nightclubs. Blaine will start the show on a stage in front of Paradise Live, and his interactions with the crowd will be projected live onto a large screen.

The Seminole Hard Rock brought in Blaine to help launch its Mix and Mingle Happy Hour, to be held every Friday. From 6 to 9 p.m., well drinks will be two-for-one at the following bars and restaurants: Bongos Cuban Cafe and Sky Lounge, Murphy's Law Irish Pub, Piano Hollywood, Slims Roxstar, the Swamp Bar, Wet Willie's, Martorano's Italian-American Kitchen, Sirocco, Tatu, Tequila Ranch and the Fort Lauderdale Improv. The casino bars also will serve two-for-ones.

Blaine's performance follows the airing this past Tuesday of "Real or Magic," an ABC special in which he performed tricks for such stars as Jamie Foxx, Ricky Gervais, Katy Perry, Woody Allen, Kanye West and Robert De Niro.

Blaine, 40, has a history of doing some pretty freaky stuff. He has been buried alive in New York for a week and encased inside a six-ton block of ice for three days and nights. He stood atop a 100-foot-tall pillar in New York's Bryant Park for 36 hours without a safety net. In October 2012, he stood in the middle of a million volts of electricity for 73 consecutive hours.

Aside from the stunts, "Real or Magic" presented a more personal, everyday magic, featuring such standards (very well executed) as the "think-of-a-card" maneuver and the spike-through-the-hand trick. It's those kind of ploys — Blaine calls it "street magic — that he will offer on Friday.

Blaine started performing this type of magic when he was 17, and moved to Manhattan after from his birthplace in Brooklyn. It also was the focal point of his first TV special, "David Blaine: Street Magic," which aired in 1997 on NBC as his star began to rise.

Seminole officials say Friday is the first time they have offered a property-wide happy hour. The Mix and Mingle Happy Hour is set to run through the winter.
