As South Florida's cosplayers, video-gamers and anime die-hards descend on the Florida Supercon starting Thursday, nerds of a certain age may no doubt recognize a few celebrity faces (and voices) from their childhood: wrestling legend Sgt. Slaughter ("I hate maggots!"), the voice of Ash Ketchum from "Pokemon" and, yes, even the reunited cast of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
Joining the bill of near- and distant-past pop-culture giants on hand at the Miami Airport Convention Center will be George Takei (Mr. Sulu on "Star Trek"), the LGBT activist recently seen conquering your Facebook news feed with silly cat pictures.
Aside from the 350 celebrity guests, the eighth edition of the Florida Supercon, expecting to court north of 20,000 geeks this year, will feature cosplay contests and photo shoots and a 50-band music festival with ska-punk act Askultura and new wave band Astari Nite.
Also to be found in the convention hall are several comic-book illustrators and scribes of "X-Men," "Spider-Man" and "Captain America," as well as "My Little Pony"-costumed members of the Bronies of South Florida meetup group.
Florida Supercon will take place 11 a.m.-3 a.m. Thursday and 10 a.m.-3 a.m. Friday through Sunday at the Miami Airport Convention Center, 711 NW 72nd Ave. Tickets cost $25-$70, $199 for VIP. Call 954-399-1330 or go to FloridaSupercon.com.
