Florida has little in common with Kentucky, but Derby Day still provides an excuse to party like the Bluegrass State. That means hat contests and mint juleps.
At 4 p.m. Saturday, Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach will award $500 for the best hat, with consolation prizes to four runners-up. Guests can fill up at the Ten Palms buffet overlooking Gulfstream for $32.99. The Fountain Club has a prix-fixe menu of $27.99.
Mint juleps? They're $8, and served in a souvenir glass.
Gulfstream also will hold a drawing one hour before the race's 6:24 p.m. start Saturday to give away five wagers on the race, ranging from $150 to $600.
Eight TV, radio and print journalists will race 100 yards for charity at about 3 p.m. at Calder Casino and Race Course, which will offer $250 in cash and prizes for its top hatter at 3:15 p.m.
The Palm Beach Kennel Club will hold its hat contest at 12:45 p.m. It will sell mint juleps for $5, and greyhound pet representatives will meet with people considering adopting a dog.
Meanwhile, the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will host the sixth annual Rock the Race: A Kentucky Derby Bash at 4 p.m. at Murphy's Law Irish Pub. The event benefits the Ann Storck Center. Tickets cost $50 per person or $85 per couple. Go to RockTheRace.org.Copyright © 2015, South Florida
