Jillian Michaels breaks a 'Sweat'

As an eighth-grader, Jillian Michaels weighed 175 pounds, and classmates mooed at her.

Boy, is she getting even.

"The Biggest Loser" star, 60 pounds lighter, comes to South Florida for the inaugural Sweat USA, a fitness convention that includes big-name trainers leading classes for the public. She'll teach her new Body Shred program at 10 a.m. and noon Saturday.

Michaels and her partner, Heidi Rhoades, became parents to two children in May 2012. Like many moms, Michaels' schedule is stretched.

"The first six months were overwhelming, but while it can seem daunting, there are some simple solutions [for moms]," she says.

Quicker, harder workouts are the way to go, she says.

"If you can find four half-hours a week, you're winning," Michaels says. She recommends working out to a DVD, trading off child-care with a spouse and having grandparents baby-sit.

Michaels' newest project is promoting Body Shred, a 30-minute program that she would like to see major gym chains incorporate. "It touches on all fitness modalities," she says.

Her "3-2-1 Interval Approach" consists of three minutes of strength training, followed by two minutes of cardio, one minute of ab workouts, and then repeated.

On Tuesday she'll return for Season 15 of NBC's fitness competition "The Biggest Loser," which some trainers criticize for being unrealistic.

"I won't say it's a false picture, but it's an extremely incomplete picture," she says. "Because it would be impossible to show people all of what's going on."

Sweat USA, billed as "the nation's first All-Star Fitness Festival," includes P90X creator Tony Horton and Insanity founder Shaun T., as well as the latest concepts and products from the health and fitness industry. Horton will teach classes at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Shaun T. will instruct at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday, and they both will present half-hour talks on Sunday.

Trainers will be representing more than a dozen of the latest workout programs, including Zumba's Heidy Torres, Brazilian Butt Lift's Leandro Carvalho and Piloxing's Viveca Jensen. There also will be Flywheel, CrossFit and MMA instruction, and South Florida native and celebrity fitness model Jennifer Nicole Lee will host JNL Fusion, designed to help people lose weight, burn fat and build lean muscles.

Lee has appeared on about 70 fitness magazine covers, and has developed a 30-minute workout consisting of six circuits.

"To me, Miami is the fitness capital of the world, and I'm really excited to bring the energy here," she says, adding that this weekend's event is different.

"I've done festivals where it's competitive, but this is more interactive with the fans," she says.

Joe Anthony, founder of Sweat USA, says Miami works because, "We knew we had talent that drew form an international market base, and we could compound that in a warm-weather-climate market."

"They call it a fitness concert. It's a serious platform," Anthony says. "We know fitness is huge and growing, and there are all kinds of new regimes and innovations. We're helping not only the hard-core but the casual enthusiast who is looking for a routine. It's about discovery and providing people with options so they can tailor their regimens."

But Michaels and the other stars aren't the only attraction, he notes.

"Homegrown trainers are important, because they are on the cusp of the trends," Anthony says. "They could be the Jillians or the Sean T's of tomorrow."

Sweat USA classes will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, and Sunday, Oct. 13, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, 901 Convention Center Drive. General admission costs $20.
