World Tai Chi Day to be celebrated in Boca Raton

The tai chi wave will start in New Zealand, well before the sun rises here. It will then cause practitioners to stand and stretch across Europe and North America, until it reaches Hawaii.

The 16th annual World Tai Chi and Qi Gong Day is Saturday, April 26, and it will be celebrated at 10 a.m. local time worldwide at about 500 venues.

Tai chi is a martial-arts system that teaches practitioners how to focus on one thing at a time, says Diane Gold, who will lead a gathering in Boca Raton.

The practice begins with the mind, she says, and can help to reduce stress.

"It's not angels and fairies," Gold says. "This is an exercise that changes your biology. If you're in business and freaking out, you can apply tai chi to your brain, and you can slow things down. It gives you the ability to stop panicking."

Gold says she mostly teaches private classes, but the public can practice with her 6 p.m. Tuesdays on the beach at Palmetto Park Road. The class is free, but donations are accepted. Call 561-367-7788.

Saturday's event will take place at Sanborn Square, 72 N. Federal Highway, in Boca Raton. Go to
