On Saturday in Wilton Manors, a traditional fundraising event will be followed by a not-so-traditional one. The second annual Santa's Fun Run/Walk and Sleigh Race will begin at 8 a.m. While many nonprofits are turning to 5K runs to raise money, this race encourages participants not to worry about their time and to dress in holiday garb, says Terry DeCarlo, director of development and public relations for Broward House, the beneficiary of the event
"It's the Christmas season," he says. "You should be able to act as you want to."
DeCarlo notes that some groups are hosting "sewing parties" to create outlandish costumes for the run. Still, he says, race company Split Second Timing will be on hand to provide runners with their results. "We know there are some people who really care about their times," DeCarlo says.
At 1 p.m., a bed race will feature teams of five, with one person in the bed at all times. DeCarlo says a few teams have already entered, but he'd like to see more. Teams so far include All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth and Santa Baby. Another bed will be decorated as a dreidel. Making the race more complicated is a requirement partway through in which teams must swap out the bed's passenger. DeCarlo says the winner will be honored with a trophy and the title of Wilton Manors Bed Heads, and will be feted at an afterparty.
Entry to the bed race is $500, but 100 percent of the entry fees and the $25 registration for the 5K will go to Broward House, South Florida's oldest and largest HIV help agency. Broward House's 15 locations provide services such as medical care, substance-abuse and mental-health counseling and, in some cases, housing to more than 6,000 Florida residents annually.
Participants will meet up at the Shoppes of Wilton Manors at 2226 Wilton Drive. For more information, go to BrowardHouse.org.Copyright © 2015, South Florida
