Alien Invasion at West Palm museum

Calling all earthlings: The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium is under attack! Aliens will take over the science center for a family-friendly night of interactive entertainment during the monthly Nights at the Museum event on July 25.

"We're always trying to think of fun and different ways to experience the science center," says marketing director Belen Woods. "We try to do something a little offbeat with a scientific twist, so there will be a bunch of activities, crafts and games for families."

Alien Invasion Nights at the Museum will include games and crafts, music, dancing and face painting, as well as screenings of WXEL's children's TV show, "Space Racers." A planetarium show, "Black Holes: The Other Side of Infinity," will run every 30 minutes throughout the night.

The center will also invite guests to use its communications station, "which is a way for people to communicate only using radios," Woods said. "Participants will be able to use Morse code to correspond with people around the world."

Of course, there will also be an opportunity to learn about the solar system. "The observatory will be open, allowing people to get a closer look at Mars and Saturn," Woods said.

Volunteer Bob Guzauskas, who's in charge of observations at Nights at the Museum, said these types of events bring back childhood memories.

"I got my first telescope for a merit badge as a Cub Scout," he recalled. "I grew up in a farm community in Illinois, and my grandparents would point out the Milky Way and stuff in the night sky. It was something I really enjoyed."

The only obstacle, he said, could come from summer smog and ambient light from Interstate 95.

He's not too concerned, though: "There's plenty to see up there. Don't worry, we'll find something."

The South Florida Science Center and Aquarium hosts Nights at the Museum events on the last Friday of every month. August's theme will be based around archaeology., @medinasmedia
