There are no small parts, the theater axiom goes.
That is certainly the case with Osiris Blade, the adult-film star who will make his stage debut in "All-Male Peep Show" during its run March 5 through April 12 in Fort Lauderdale. He may have only one line, but the whole play revolves around his character, also a porn star.
Blade says he's ready for the challenge, even though his only experience was a high school drama class when he was growing up in Charlotte, N.C.
"It's kind of like those plays in the '60s and '70s, like 'Hair' where the whole point of the show is people onstage naked," Blade says from his home in Fort Lauderdale. "I've always enjoyed theater and presenting myself in front of an audience. I dance every now and then in some of the clubs here."
Blade, who served in the Marine Corps from 2007 to 2011 and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, has made one film, titled "Big Release," and appeared in seven scenes for gay porn websites. His nom de porn was inspired by some of his Egyptian-themed tattoos.
"I had a plan," says Blade, 35. "And in all honesty, it was to take over the world. I just dive right on in, swim with the fishes, run with the wolves. And, at some point in time, it will all come to be. One minute, you're 18 or 19 and watching your first porn video, and the next everything unfolds into this wonderful fantasy. Several years down the road, and I am building this fantasy."
"All-Male Peep Show" offers a behind-the-scenes look at the life of a Times Square porno palace in the days before Rudy Giuliani cleaned up New York. The story examines the owner, the dancers and the customers.
David R. Gordon, the play's producer and a co-owner of Empire Stage, helped the New York-based director and playwright Ronnie Larsen ("Making Porn") with casting. He says Blade has the chops.
"He's very bright," Gordon says. "I wish I could cast him in other roles. He has a good presence, and he's a good-looking guy. He's just a regular guy, you know? He's a military guy, an ex-Marine. Those guys do their work. If he told me he wanted more substantial roles, I would find something for him to do."
Gordon adds that Blade has a previous commitment the third week of the run, so gay porn legend Chad Donovan will fill in.
"I kind of wanted to do it," Blade says. "I was really interested. I live a life of no expectations. If I say I'm doing it, then I'm doing it. There's no backing out. It's a small adventure, but I have built my life on adventure."
"All-Male Peep Show" will run March 5 through April 12 at Empire Stage, 1140 N. Flagler Drive, in Fort Lauderdale. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 5 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $30. To order, call 954-678-1496 or go to EmpireStage.com.
