Sunrise Cinemas Gateway
1820 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954/763-7994, www.sunrisecinemas.com

The original Gateway cinema, with its vintage street-side marquee, opened in the 1950s and has only gotten better with age. Once a large-scale theater with a single screen, the Gateway now has four screens showing films of varying styles and cultural origins. While one may offer a mainstream Hollywood drama, the others will likely have American independents, must-see documentaries such as Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, a European or Asian art film, or the latest in gay and lesbian cinema. The seats face the screen at odd angles, but because of the content of the movies and character of the venue, this is merely a charming quirk. A message board in the lobby allows audiences to post critiques of the movie they've just seen. And with restaurants such as Il Mulino, Sukhothai and Canyon nearby, patrons can enjoy dinner and a movie without having to move their cars.
