Jack's Bar-B-Q Smokehouse
500 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park, 954/567-9595
It still looks like the Taco Bell that once called this place home, but the big, smoking grills in the parking lot and the outside bathrooms are your first clues that it's not. Most everything, including the lemonade, is homemade at this family-owned and -operated restaurant, dubbed "The Smokehouse of the South." The menu includes spare ribs, chicken, pulled pork, sliced beef and deep-fried catfish. The coleslaw is superb, the steak fries are huge, and diners who like collard greens say they're good. Ribs are high on the list of recommendations, but you'll definitely need the moist towelettes and half that roll of paper towels sitting on each table to get through them. And unlike some barbecue restaurants, this one offers wine and beer.
